Peyten Wiese and Landon Brown placed fourth at the National Speech and Debate Association’s tournament held in Brookings from February 28 – 29. The tournament was a qualifying tournament for the National Debate Tournament to be held in Albuquerque, New Mexico in June. Debate teams and individuals from the nine different schools in the Northern South Dakota League competed for the top two spots in each division.

Wiese and Brown were the only team from a small school to earn an award. They placed fourth in the Duo Interp division.

Wiese, DeAndre French, Max Lightfield, Aiden Ludvigson, and Marion Mischel will also compete in the 2020 South Dakota State Debate & IE Tournament on March 6-7 at Huron High School. The tournament includes Class AA and Class A debate teams from across the state. Brown will conclude his oral interp and debate career at the NDSA Student Congress competition in Aberdeen on March 12.

Kathy Tyler, coach for the team says “These students worked hard three times a week to develop their debate and IE skills. Since there was no debate class at MHS this year, they took it upon themselves and carved out time after school nearly every week since September.”
