Three Generations of Deb Bowsher’s Family Serving Milbank Free Meals
Local News April 7, 2020 Staff Writer 0
Central United Methodist Church in Milbank has been preparing a free evening meal each Wednesday night for many years. From fall through spring, the church traditionally serves a dine-in meal to about 200 people. Recently, the communal meal made the switch to pick-up-and-go meals. Deb Bowsher, coordinator of the meals says, “We are the hands and feet of Jesus and we need to continue doing it especially during this time of great need.
Deb has coordinated the project since 2015, when her husband became the pastor at Central. A small group of volunteers, which often vary from week to week, help her to prepare and distribute the food. In the last few weeks, her helpers have been fewer, but their bond is strong — three generations strong. She has relied most heavily on her daughter Madi, who is taking a hiatus from law school, and her mother, Ada Lower, who recently moved to Milbank. LeAnn Kuper and Mary Dahl make the delicious desserts.
The first week of the to-go meal service, they served 80 meals. Last week, they served 127 meals, and this week they project 135 requests. Deb says, “The meals are for anyone who would like one – from families with limited resources to busy moms who need a break. Anyone can get a meal. No questions asked.” The church funds the meals as a service to the congregation and community. Deb says she wants to emphasize, “We welcome anyone to come get a meal, not just people who attend Central.”
Free-will donations are accepted, but not required. Donations of hamburger and other food are also accepted, but also not required. (Food is purchased locally. All CDC safety precautions are followed.)
If you would like a meal, call the church office at 605.432.4766, to sign up. Pick up times are 5:15-6:15 p.m. Arrangements can also be made for delivery.
