You’re home in bed at 3 a.m.and hear sirens. Do you roll over and go to sleep? If you get up, get dressed, grab your gear, and race into a burning building, you’re probably a firefighter. And most likely a volunteer — three out of four American firefighters are volunteers.

On Saturday, July 11, say “Thank you!” to all the brave and dedicated Big Stone City volunteer firemen at Big Stone City Firemen Appreciation Day. Meet up with your friends at the Big Stone Fire Hall for a full day of fun.

Smoke the competition in the annual poker run. The ride starts at noon; registration opens at 11 a.m.

Cornhole tournament registration is just $20 per team and includes two drinks. The tournament format uses rally scoring and double elimination. Tournament registration starts at noon; play starts at 1 p.m. The top three teams take home money.

Tank up at the pork loin feed. It lasts from 5 -7 p.m. or until only the pig tail is left. Don’t forget your freewill donation.

And stick around for the street dance. The dance features music by DJ Chris Peterson of Montevideo. Admission is $5. Wet your whistle on a beer or mixed drinks. Dance from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m. or at least until the midnight drawing. You could win an Arctic Cat Prowler! Or $500! $250! $100 or $50! Only 800 tickets will be sold, and you don’t even have to be present to win. But you won’t want to miss the excitement.

Get your tickets from Twin Valley Tire in Milbank; Big Stone Liquor Store; The Big Stone Legion; Minnwest Bank or NAPA Auto Parts in Ortonville.

Fire Chief Joe Wik says, “This is a major fundraiser for our department and has been for over 20 years. It’s a way for us to update our equipment and all proceeds go towards funding the Big Stone Fire Department.”
