According to Jeny Koplin of Schmidt’s Landing, the perch and bluegill have been biting on Big Stone Lake. “People are reeling in perch using small jigs or a lure called Schucks with a variety of bait. Some anglers are using spikes and wax worms to catch more, but with minnows they are catching bigger perch.”

Koplin says nightcrawlers have also been bringing in the perch. Bluegill are biting on nightcrawlers, too, and spikes and wax worms. Koplin reminds anglers, “When fishing for perch and bluegill, the key is to use a lightweight rod. The bites can be pretty light.”

Koplin describes dock fishing this summer as “incredible” and stated many people have been catching a wide variety of fish from the shore. She says, “We’ve been seeing walleye, bluegill, perch, largemouth bass, white bass, and more. Dock fishing is such a great way to get the kids involved.”

“Recently, we haven’t seen as many walleyes caught from boats,” Koplin says, “but if you can find an area to troll without weeds, you could land a nice one.”

Strong winds have also been a persistent source of frustration this summer. “At times, it comes right down the lake and there isn’t much shelter. We’re hoping for calmer days ahead to get people out on the lake.”

More people are using the water for other recreation, too, Koplin says. “The weekends get busy with people cruising around, tubing, and jet skiing along with all the fishing boats. It’s a great summer to go out with family on the lake.”
