The  Bulldogs suffered a  21-10 loss to No. 2 Canton in the opening round of the Class 11A high school football playoffs on Thursday, October 29, in Canton. The No. 7 Bulldogs nearly pulled off an upset until a rally by the C-Hawks late in the game quashed the Bulldogs’ plans of continuing on.

A penalty revoked a touchdown by the Dawgs early in the game, but a field goal by Bennett Schwenn gave the Bulldogs an early 3-0 lead.  Later in the first quarter, Canton broke free to complete a six-yard touchdown pass. The successful extra point attempt gave them the lead at 3-7.  The remainder of the first half was a battle of the defense, and no other points were put up on the scoreboard.

The third quarter started with the score at 3-7.  Milbank found paydirt with a 34-yard touchdown run by Schwenn. Schwenn also kicked the extra point to take back the lead for the Bulldogs at 10-7.

The fourth quarter was Milbank’s Waterloo. Canton surprised the Bulldogs with a 80-yard touchdown pass. The extra point kick was good to put the C-Hawks ahead 10-14. They followed it with a 13-yard touchdown run and another successful extra point kick. That moved the final score to 21-10 and the “W” to Canton’s win column.

“The kids played extremely hard,” stated Brian Allmendinger, head coach for the Bulldogs. “It was a tough loss for sure, but a lot of positives can be taken from it. I’m proud of how the team played and happy they had the opportunity to experience the playoff atmosphere.”

Milbank chalked up 242 total yards of offense with 139 yards passing and 103 yards rushing. Canton racked up 275  yards from 190 yards passing and 85 yards rushing. Milbank had two turnovers; Canton had zero.
