According to MHS debate coach, Kathy Tyler, all four debate teams attended virtual tournaments last week. Tyler says, “Speaker points were outstanding for all our debaters.”

The sophomore team of Max Lightfield and Aiden Ludvigson competed in the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Tournament on November 13 and November 14. Competitors attended from Brookings, Rapid City Stevens, Harrisburg, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, and debate academies in Maryland, California, and Virginia.

The MHS duo compiled a 4-1 record and earned a trip to the elimination bracket. They won two of the three final rounds to win second place out of ten teams in the novice division.

The novice teams also competed virtually on Tuesday, November 10.  They faced debaters from Brookings, Sioux Falls Christian, Sioux Falls Lincoln, Harrisburg, Watertown, Mitchell, O’Gorman, and Sioux Falls Washington.
The team of Lydia Street and Camila Monroy Bello won one round and lost one round.  Brooke Schwagel and Ivy Lewno lost their three rounds.  Raul Berrones and Ayrianna Butler won one and lost two.

Coach Tyler says, “There will be a new resolution announced in December.”  She reminds students and parents, “There’s still  time to join the debate squad. Or check out our other competitions — Student Congress, Lincoln-Douglas, duo-interp, extemp, and original oratory.”
