Veronica Fonder, an eighth grader at Milbank Middle School, was the top speller in northeast South Dakota’s regional spelling bee.  Fonder earned the right to compete at the state competition of the Scripps Spelling Bee at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion on Saturday, March 6. The state winner advances to the national competition in Washington, D.C., and receives an all-expenses-paid trip for four.
Seventh grader Keira Steffen and eighth graders Jessel Stengel and Gemma Street also spelled their way to a top-four finish. Approximately 200 other students in grades six through eight competed in the regional tournament.
