The 71st Annual South Dakota All-State Band will be held at the Mitchell Performing Arts Center in Mitchell on March 26-27. William and Hope Karels, children of Jason and Susan Karels, were selected to represent MHS.
William, a junior, was one of of 12 tubas chosen, and Hope, a freshman, was one of eight bass clarinets selected for the top high school band in South Dakota. William will sit at first chair tuba in the Wallace Ensemble. Hope will sit at second chair bass clarinet in the LaCognata Ensemble. This year, the traditional two bands will be divided into four bands for social distancing purposes.
The Wallace Ensemble, under the director of Dr. Jacob Wallace of SDSU, will rehearse and perform in concert on March 26. The LaCognata Ensemble, directed by Dr. John LaCognata of USD, will rehearse and perform in concert on March 27. Susan Karels, grades 6-12 band director for the Milbank School District, will accompany the students to Mitchell.
