MHS debaters Lydia Street and Brooke Schwagel attended the Northern South Dakota District Qualifier debate tournament on Saturday, February 20, with the best of intentions — to take one for the team. In order to ensure four teams could attend nationals in the public forum event, the district was required to have 20 teams participate. If the Milbank team did not participate, they could only send three teams.

Coach Kathy Tyler said, “Lydia and Brooke knew it was going to be tough, but they stepped up to the plate to help out other teams, saw what the varsity level was like—especially AA varsity—and decided to learn from it.” Lydia and Brooke ended by scoring 0-2, but they are refining their cases and improving their rebuttal and cross-fire skills in preparation for the state tournament.” Max Lightfield and Aiden Ludvigson produced a 1-2 record against the double A schools.

These four debaters, along with team member Peyten Wiese, will compete virtually in South Dakota’s 2021 State Debate Tournament held at Aberdeen Central on March 5-6.
