Jerry Janisch, FFA adviser for MHS, announced Isaac Sousa was selected as the 2021-2022 Milbank FFA Chapter President. Sousa was chosen at the annual FFA member and parent banquet on May 3. Other FFA senior chapter officers will include: vice president Hattie Muellenbach; secretary, Marion Mischel; treasurer, Wylie Mursu; reporter, Keara Van Hoorn; sentinel, Tice Muru; student adviser, Natalie Meyer; parliamentarian, Luis Berrones; and community/student relations, Korbin Leddy and Raul Berrones. These FFA members will form the Milbank FFA Executive Board that plans and conducts the FFA members’ activities throughout the year.
2021 Milbank FFA Chapter Awards:
MEMBER OF THE YEAR — Eric VanSambeek. Eric served as the 2020-2021 parliamentarian for the Milbank chapter. He was also a member of the senior parliamentary procedure career development and the agricultural mechanics career development events. Throughout the year, Eric worked on various chapter projects, such as the fruit sales and fundraiser. He received his state FFA degree in April.
SEIZE THE MOMENT – JUSTIN MAASS AWARD — Camryn Phinney. The Seize the Moment–Justin Maass Award was voted on by Milbank FFA members and awarded to the Milbank FFA member who at his/her best represents enthusiasm and dedication for the Milbank FFA Chapter throughout the year. Camryn, who received a plaque from the Lynn and Brenda Masss family, was the student reporter for 2020-2021 Milbank FFA Chapter and a member of the floriculture team. She placed third at the state floriculture career development event.
STAR GREENHAND — Raul Berrones Star FFA Greenhand is the top award given to a first-year Milbank FFA member. Raul placed second in the state food science development event. He was a member of the junior FFA officers and participated in the conduct of meeting event.
STAR CHAPTER PLACEMENT—Jessica Pillatzki. Star FFA Chapter Placement is the top award given to the Milbank FFA member that is involved in agriculture placement site as part of the member-supervised agriculture experience project. Jessica works at Shady Beach as part of her Supervised Agriculture Experience project. She received her State FFA Degree in April and also participated in prepare public speaking and milk quality development events.
STAR CHAPTER PRODUCTION — Korbin Leddy. Star FFA Chapter is the top FFA award for the Milbank FFA member that is involved in agriculture production as part of the member-supervised agriculture experience project. Korbin raises Charolais cattle that he shows across South Dakota and the United States.
LEADERSHIP — Leadership awards are given to FFA members who “stepped outside the box” to try different approaches in order to finish projects. Recipients included: Kaden Schweer, Avery Van Overbeke, Cassidy Schwagel, Natalie Meyer, and Jessica Pillatzki
SCHOLARSHIP — Scholarship awards are based on a student’s grade point average in the agriculture education course during the 2020-2021 school year. Recipients included: Raul Berronies, Cassidy Schwagel, and Natalie Meyer.
