The 740th Transportation Company of the South Dakota National Guard held its annual family picnic on Saturday, July 10, at Hartford Beach on Big Stone Lake. Sergeant First Class Brandon Peery says about 150-200 people attend the picnic each year. All of the guests are members of the 740th Transportation Company and their families. Peery says they usually also welcome about 15 or 20 retired members. The guards plan the picnic, which is either held at Hartford Beach or Wylie Park in Aberdeen.

When everyone arrives, the guards start with a formation before the activities of the day. They then grill hamburgers and hot dogs along with serving salads, chips cookies and bars. The kids enjoy yard games and entertain themselves by playing in the park. Peery, says he isn’t sure how long the 740th’s picnic has been held, but he knows it was already a tradition when he joined in 1998.
