Max Schuelke and Rylen Frerichs, Milbank’s novice public debate team, compiled a perfect record and placed third in the McGovern Tournament in Mitchell on November 19-20. Three of the 34 teams from 24 schools had perfect records of 5-0, thus speaker points determined the top three place winners.

Milbank’s second public forum team of Qualon Grant and Shane Spiering finished with a 1-4 record. Ivy Lewno joined Brooke Schwagel for her first public forum debate this year. They earned a 2-3 record.

The Milbank team also hosted the first Milbank Novice Public Forum Debate Tournament on Tuesday, November 9, in what is intended to be an annual event. Twenty-five teams from Aberdeen, Brookings, Watertown, Madison, and Milbank participated.

Four teams — including two from Milbank — completed the tournament with 3-0 records. The teams of Grant and Spiering and Schuelke and Frerichs took top honors.  Gregory Grabow and Camila Monroy won two of their three rounds.

On November 6, Schuelke, Frerichs, Schwagel, Paulina Burke, Max Lightfield and Lewno vied with 11 other schools and 126 debaters in the annual Sioux Falls Roosevelt Sweepstakes.
Lightfield advanced to the quarter finals in Novice Lincoln-Douglas and placed fourth in his division. Lewno and Schwagel and Burke each won one round and lost four rounds in their divisions. Schuelke and Frerichs won three rounds and lost two.

The tournament gives awards to the top AA and A schools. Milbank brought home the second place trophy in the A division.
Coach Kathy Tyler said, “I am very proud of the debaters. Ivy stepped up to the plate when Brooke’s original partner became ill. She did an amazing job. Qualon’s and Shane’s first big tournament was an eye opener for them, and they know what they need to do next time.” Coach Tyler aslo commented that it is impressive to see how much the students have improved their speaking, research, and organizational skills from the beginning of the year. She said, “Our debaters debate well and professionally. We are one of very few small schools with a debate program, and we are noticed.”
