Brent M. Hanson will face trial this summer on charges of killing his brother Clyde and Clyde’s wife, Jessica Hanson, who was nine months pregnant.

On Tuesday, January 4, Hanson, 57, was arraigned at the Grant County Courthouse and entered a plea of not guilty on each of six counts of murder — three counts of first-degree murder and three counts of second-degree murder. Hanson’s arraignment occurred after a grand jury filed an indictment on December 29.

In South Dakota, both charges carry a mandatory life sentence upon conviction. A first-degree murder verdict is also punishable by death.
Judge Dawn Elshere, a judge for the Third Judicial Circuit in South Dakota, set a jury trial date of August 11. Hanson remains jailed on a $5 million cash bond.
