Camila Monroy placed first in the Saturday Student Congress event at the annual Rushmore Challenge Debate Tournament hosted by Harrisburg High School on February 11-12.

Kathy Tyler, coach of the MHS team, said, “Debaters Qualen Grant, Max Schuelke, Shane Spiering, and Rylen Frerichs added varsity individual events to their repertoire. Rylen debuted his original oratory piece. Shane participated in International Extemp, and Max and Qualen hit the Domestic Extemp circuit. There were no placings, but everyone learned a lot.”

“This debate tournament proved to be one of the most competitive of the year. Schools are gearing up for the national qualifier (quals) and the state tournament, and it showed.,” commented Tyler. Milbank debaters were given the opportunity to recognize what they need to work on for the quals in two weeks and South Dakota’s state tournament, which will send the Bulldogs back to Harrisburg on March 4-5.
