Jim Gesswein and Daryl Halvorson presented checks from the Milbank Hospital Foundation and Milbank Kiwanis to help defray the travel expenses of five MHS... Community Leaders Donate $5000 to Send HOSA Students to International Conference

Jim Gesswein and Daryl Halvorson presented checks from the Milbank Hospital Foundation and Milbank Kiwanis to help defray the travel expenses of five MHS students who plan to attend HOSA’s International Leadership Conference in Nashville, Tennessee, from June 21-26.

Gesswein represented the hospital foundation board in presenting their donation of $2500, and Halvorson, who is also a member of the hospital foundation board, represented Kiwanis in presenting their donation of $500. “We hope they have a wonderful learning experience on their trip,” Halvorson said.

Upon learning of the need for funds, Jason Mischel from Valley Queen also reached out to HOSA to offer a donation from the Valley Queen Charitable Foundation.  “The Valley Queen Charitable Foundation is happy to support Milbank HOSA competitors, who have demonstrated a high level of commitment to mastering their competitive subjects,” said the foundation’s chairperson, Doug Wilke. “We’re proud of these students’ successes and wish them all the best as they represent Milbank at the national convention this summer.”  Karissa Karels and Mindy Rogers presented Valley Queen’s $2,000 check to HOSA.

Hattie Muellenbach, Savannah Stengel, Julia Wiik, Jaclyn Wiik, and Stella Wendland are the students who qualified for HOSA’s international event during South Dakota’s State Leadership Conference in Sioux Falls on April 1.

Johanna Fischer, adviser for Milbank’s HOSA group, said, “I am extremely proud of the HOSA students and the way they have represented Milbank… This is a student-led organization. The students are the ones who put in all the hard work.  I am just here to help guide them and give them the tools and resources they need to reach their goals… The community support is what is helping to make this experience obtainable for these young people.”

According to HOSA, their mission is to empower future health professionals to become leaders in the global health community through education and collaboration.
