Tuesday, June 7, is Election Day for voters in South Dakota. Polls are open from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m.
Amendment C is the one race all registered South Dakota voters, regardless of their party affiliation or address, are eligible to vote on. Republicans will also mark their party’s choice for Governor, US Senator, and member of the US House of Representatives. Registered Democrats have no statewide candidate races on the ballot.

In District 4, which includes all of Grant County, four Republican candidates vie for the opportunity to be on November’s ballot. Only two will advance.
In the only local race, residents of Ward Two will decide who will represent them on the city council. Incumbent Scott Hoeke faces challenger Craig Weinberg.

Grant County Auditor Karen Layher says, “As of today, we have received 241 absentee ballots. The weather looks nice for Tuesday, so I encourage the voters of Grant County to go to the polls.”

Amendment C –  All Registered Voters are Eligible to Vote –Amendment C seeks to change the South Dakota Constitution regarding how tax and fee increases are implemented.

A vote “Yes” changes the constitution. On tax issues, it increases the citizen vote from a simple majority (over 50%) to a three-fifths majority or 60%. It also lowers the legislature’s majority vote on these issues from two-thirds (66.7%) to three-fifths 60%. The “Yes” vote also comes with a provision that any ballot measures that obligate the state to appropriate $10 million or more in the first five fiscal years must obtain three-fifths (60%) of the votes cast to be approved.

A vote “No” leaves the constitution as it is. Voters will continue to need a simple majority (50%) to pass these items on the ballot. The legislature will continue to need a two-thirds (66.7%) majority to pass these items.

Republican Nomination for Governor:Governor Kristi Noem faces Steve Haugaard. Haugaard is an attorney from Sioux Falls and a former state Speaker of the House.
Republican Nomination for US Senate:John Thune is the incumbent. He is seeking his fourth term. He faces Bruce Whalen, a citizen of the Oglala Sioux Tribe and Mark Mowry, a native of Presho.
Republican Nomination for US House of Representatives:Dusty Johnson is the incumbent. He is seeking his third term. Taffy Howard is the challenger. Howard is a lawmaker from Rapid City.
South Dakota Legislative District 4 (Voters choose two of the four candidates.)The incumbent is Fred Deutsch. Challengers are Val Rausch, Adam Grimm, and Stephanie Sauder.
