On Saturday, June 18, at approximately 7:30 p.m., the Milbank Fire and Rescue Department was dispatched to a structure fire at the Vince Meyer residence at 15519 486th Avenue. The Milbank department was called in to assist the Nassau fire team.

Milbank Fire Chief, David Giesen, said, “Upon arrival, firefighters found the house fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters pulled hand lines to knock down the flames and protect the surrounding trees and buildings. Moments after arriving, we were informed that a barn across the road belonging to Keith Welberg was also in flames. Due to the high winds, embers from the house fire had drifted across the road and ignited straw bales that were in the barn.

“Both structures were a total loss,” Chief Giesen reported. “Firefighters remained on the scene until midnight, and the Nassau and Milbank departments continued to monitor hot spots until 2 p.m. on Sunday.” The cause of the fire is under investigation by the South Dakota Fire Marshall’s office.

Along with the Nassau and Milbank squads, mutual aid was provided by the Big Stone, Bellingham, Madison, Marietta, and Revillo fire departments. Grant County Emergency Management, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, and the Grant-Roberts Ambulance also added assistance.
