Garrett Mertens nailed an 80-yard touchdown pass to Jayden Johnson to give the Bulldogs an early 6-0 lead in their season opener against Beresford on August 26. The Watchdogs, however, were on their home turf and retaliated with 41 straight points. Milbank remained silent for the rest of the game and took the non-conference loss at 6-41.
For the Bulldogs’ offense, MIlbank connected on 26 of 30 attempts rushing. Mertens completed three of his eight passes for a total 113 yards in the air.
On the receiving end, Jackson Bohlen caught one pass for 12 yards.
Aidan Foell recorded seven tackles and a sack to lead the Bulldogs on defense. Mertens and Johnson claimed three tackles apiece.
What’s next for the MHS football team? The Milbank Bulldogs take on the Madison Bulldogs on Friday, September 2. Kick-off is at 7p.m. at A.B. Campbell Stadium in Milbank. Fans will be treated to a flag football demonstration during halftime.
