The Bulldogs traveled to Dell Rapids on Friday, September 23, to square off with the No. 2-rated  Quarriers. The Dawgs took the loss 6-37.

Milbank’s six points were scored by quarterback Garrett Mertens in the fourth quarter. Mertens ran the ball into the end zone for the touchdown. The extra-point attempt failed.

Although Milbank scored only six points in the game, fans experienced some exciting spurts of action. During the first half, the ball changed hands like a dollar bill. The Quarriers were ahead at 0-14, and were threatening to pad their lead when sophomore Tate Schlueter snagged an interception. Possession went back to the Bulldogs. The Bulldogs could not parlay their windfall into points, though, and were forced to punt.  Dell Rapids returned the favor during Milbank’s next possession by also coming up with an interception. The Quarriers then fumbled, and  MHS senior Sawyer Gauer recovered it to put the ball back in the Bulldogs’ paws.

Mertens went 11 of 21 for 106 yards passing. Johnson was Milbank’s top reciever. He had 34 yards on four catches. Gauer had three receptions for 31 yards and Hanson one catch for 14 yards.

The Bulldogs rushed for 53 yards. Gauer had 10 carries for 25 yards.  Mertens tallied 24 yards on eight carries. Barrett Schneck added seven yards on three carries. Foell contributed four yards.

For the defense, Gauer had five tackles. Foell had four. B. Schneck, Schlueter, Jayden Johnson, and Jesse Schneck, made three tackles apiece. Joe French had two. Hanson, E. Johnson, and Ethan Owen each had one. Tice Mursu added two assisted tackles.
