Milbank Fire Chief David Giesen, said, “The Milbank Fire Department had a busy Sunday.” According to Chief Giesen, on Sunday, October 23, the team was dispatched to the former Milbank Mutual Insurance building at 9:45 a.m.  Giesen reported, “The alarm was in the mechanical room.  No signs of smoke and firefighters did not find any issues. ”

“At 1:30 p.m. we were called to 473rd Ave and 154th for a grass fire,” he said. “The winds pushed the fire through a slough. Firefighters were able to stop it before it spread to a field of corn stubble.  We stayed on the scene for about three hours cutting down and putting out trees and hot spots.”  The Stockholm Fire Department and Grant County Emergency Management assisted.

At 4:45 p.m., the team was called to the Joel Adler residence at 48352 149th Street where a burn pile had reignited due to the wind.  According to Giesen, “The fire spread into a field of corn stubble. Brandon Schmidt who is with Big Stone Fire Department noticed the smoke. He and Jason Mielitz, who rents the land and is also with the Big Stone Fire Department, were able to stop the fire from spreading by using a Payloader and a skid steer.  “Milbank fire wet down the area and put out the hot spots. We were on the scene about 30 minutes,” Giesen added.
