Two mixed quartets and three instrumentalists from Milbank High School joined nearly 1000 voices and a full symphony orchestra in the 70th Annual South Dakota All-State Chorus and Orchestra. The musicians rehearsed and performed at the Denny Sanford Premier Center of Sioux Falls. The Grand Concert was presented on Saturday, October 29.
Participants from Milbank High School included: Choir – Nadia Thue and Veronica Fonder (sopranos), Ellie Neugebauer and Hope Karels (altos), Jacob Shelstad and Aiden Ludvigson (tenors) and Max Lightfield and James Batchelor (basses). Orchestra – Rachel Schulte (1st violin), Joe Schulte (1st violin), Merik Junker (percussion).
Orchestra concert selections included: “The Three Cornered Has Suite, mvt. 3 (Finale) by Manuel de Falla, “Manon Lescaut – Intermezzon from Act III” by Giacomo Puccini, and “Scheherezade, op. 35, mvt. 4” by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov. The combined orchestra and chorus selections were: Star Spangled Banner, “Hubelani Unkulunkulu from Ihuno 47” by Qinisela Sibisi and “Mass in C” (Gloria section only) by Mozart.
Vocal selections included: “Sing Out My Soul” by Marques L.A. Garrett, “Light” by Enrique Miaroma, “Spiritual” by Ysaye Barnwell, “One Step” by Jocelyn Hagen, and “Hope Linger On” by Andrea Ramsey. The musicians were under the direction of Sara Catt of Elmhurst University of Elmhurst, Illinois, and Dr. Alexander Fokkens of Alabama School of Fine Arts in Birmingham, Alabama.
Miriam Schwenn (grades 6-12) choir director and Susan Karels (grades 6-12) band director accompanied the students to the event. Elizabeth Schulte and Deb Rausch provided special instruction.
