Local News November 30, 2022 Staff 0
The MHS speech and debate teams won the 30th Annual McGovern Tournament ‘A’ Division Sweepstakes held November 18-19. Mitchell hosted the tournament for 422 students from 25 schools.
Debate coach, Kathy Tyler, said, “Max Schuelke brought home the first-place honors in Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate Shane Spiering and Qualon Grant made the trip to the stage to receive fourth place in Junior Varsity Public Forum.”
Rylen Frerichs and Jericho Jones took ninth place out of 21 teams in JV Public Forum; Keira Steffen and Dana Chan earned 11th place out of 38 teams in Novice Public Forum; Qualon Grant earned ninth place in Informative Oratory, and Keira Steffen missed the stage by one place. She took seventh, in Non-original Oratory.
Sweepstakes winners are determined by points earned in all events. Even though not all students bring home a trophy, their finishes affect the school’s final placement. “Some stepped out of their comfort zone and I’m so proud of them,” commented MHS head oral interp coach, Natasha Karels.
What’s next for the Bulldogs? Junior varsity public forum debaters will travel to Fargo on December 3-4. Students will attend the Brookings Bell Tournament on December 16-17. The novice season culminates with the Doug Tschetter Novice Championship on January 7, 2023.
