Tired of people complaining about being tired of winter? Has your March Madness bracket been busted? You’ll just laugh at winter when you vote in the South Dakota Department of Transportation (SDDOT) Snowplow Naming Contest.
The 2023 SDDOT Named Snowplows Blizzard Bracket involves 36 snowplows (named by the public over the last three years) in a single-elimination contest to determine the 2023 Fan Favorite Named Snowplow.
South Dakotans have received statewide and even national attention with their ability to come up with thousands u-pun thousands of wintry… oops… witty entries. Mr. Snow Jangles, Snow Problemo, and Quick Thaw McGraw are just a few that made the cut. Thank Me Blader, Betty White-Out, and Sleetwood Mac are equally as clever/might also melt your heart.
Everyone is having a ball with the contest, but SDDOT says the event is really about public safety – the safety of all drivers on the roadways and the safety of the snowplow drivers.
In 2021, South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem named the state’s official snowplow Dale in honor of tow truck driver Dale Jones of Watertown, who was killed on the job. In her release, Noem said, “Dale’s legacy is a tribute to all snowplow operators, tow truck drivers, law enforcement officials and others who work long hours in tough winter weather conditions to keep the traveling public safe throughout our state.”
If you travel around the state, you might catch a glimpse of Snow Force One or Control, Salt, Delete, or any of the other 34 nicknamed plows as all of the contest winners are already in active service in the SDDOT fleet.
Voting for the champion or fan favorite began on March 14 with the 36 Named SDDOT Snowplows, but there’s still time to check out the Elite 8 and vote for the Final 4 and Fan Favorite. Based on public voting totals, the favorite names (within each bracket) advance to the next round. On April 3, like the NCAA, SDDOT will also crown a winner– the 2023 Fan Favorite Named Snowplow Champion!
