The Big Stone City Fire Department was dispatched at 4:23 a.m. on Thursday, March 23, to the POET Bioprocessing ethanol plant at 48416 144th Street in Big Stone City for a dryer fire. The Milbank Fire Department was also paged to provide mutual aid in the form of a ladder truck.

According to Kevin Schuelke, head of Grant County Emergency Management, “When Big Stone firefighters arrived, they found fire in the ducting of the dryer in the upper portions of the facility. Water was fed from the ladder truck to hand lines the firefighters used to get at and extinguish the fire. The plant utilizes dryer containment measures to mitigate fire damage during these incidents.” No injuries were reported.

A spokesperson from POET commented, “Safety is our top priority at POET. Our monitoring equipment identified the problem, and we are proud of our team members, who acted quickly to ensure the safety of their coworkers and notify emergency responders.”
