MHS student council members attended the 2023 state convention March 27- 29 in Rapid City. Senior Camryn Wiese served as the state reporter and senior Max Lighfield served as vice president of the Northern Lakes Region Council. Both were elected to their positions during the 2022 convention.

Gemma Street earned the title of state representative of the Northern Lake Region and will serve on the state board for 2023-2024. Olivia Wendland was selected as the vice president of the Northern Lake Region and will serve on the regional board.

The theme for the 2023 convention was Reaching for the Stars. Events were held at The Monument. Activities included a banquet, a dance, and candidate interviews and speeches. The keynote address was presented by Jason Michaels. He also performed a magic show.

According to his biography, “Jason, better known as ‘The Card Shark’, has been a student of sleight of hand, illusion, and theater for almost 25 years. Diagnosed with Tourette’s Syndrome at age six, Jason has battled the neurological disorder and its uncontrollable tics and twitches his entire life. However, at age 16, he experienced the impossible when he first stepped onto the stage in a high school play.”  The biography explains that while Jason performed, the tics and twitches associated with his Tourette’s vanished. After wandering into a magic shop later that year, Jason’s path in life was set.

Jason is now an international award-winning entertainer, and he performs all over the world, including in Atlantic City, the Bahamas, Beijing, Chicago, Las Vegas, London, Orlando, and his hometown of Nashville.
