Milbank’s FFA Dairy Cattle Team is headed to Nationals! Team members Keara Van Hoorn and Cassidy, Bailey, and Brooke Schwagel advance to the 2023 National FFA Convention and Expo in Indianapolis from November 1-4. The team punched their ticket when they earned first place at the state convention held April 15-17 in the Swiftel  Center at South Dakota State University in Brookings. Van Hoorn also earned first place individually.

Sara Colombe, ag instructor and FFA adviser at MHS, said, “We had a successful State FFA Convention!” The Milbank FFA Chapter brought home top places in several categories:

Agronomy – 6th Place  (Landon Novy-45th, Avery Van Overbeke-14th, Kaden Schweer-20th, Nick Fonder-60th). The Agronomy team also tied for fifth place in the South Dakota Farmers Union Farm Safety Quiz Bowl.

Dairy Cattle – 1st Place – Advance to National Competition (Keara Van Hoorn-1st, Cassidy Schwagel-3rd, Bailey Schwagel-6th, Brooke Schwagel-13th).

Food Science – 2nd Place  (Harley Davis-13th, Raul Berrones-6th, Grace Weston-3rd, Sunne DeBoer-29th).

Livestock – 10th  (Cailey Sime-93rd, Kalli Grong-16th, Kenzie Kooima-112th Abby Pillatzki-69th).

Meats – 6th Place  (Carter Phinney-17th, Jacob Shelstad-26th, Nathan Pillatzki-29th, Jacob Bublitz-33rd).

Milk Quality – 7th Place  (Luis Berrones-44th, Ashlynn Lamp-84th,Veronica Fonder-16th, Joe French).

Natural Resources – 21st Place  (Tice Mursu-13th, Bergen Notling-111st, Brooke Mumbauer-170th, Megan Wiese-158th).

State FFA Degrees:  

Cassidy Schwagel, Keara Van Hoorn, Luis Berrones, Tice Mursu, and Harley Davis.– all of Milbank– and Alyssa Feather of Wilmot were recognized for achieving the distinction of a State FFA Degree. 

The State FFA degree is the highest degree of membership conferred by the South Dakota FFA Association. Degree recipients are required to earn or productively invest at least $1,000 or work at least 300 hours in excess of scheduled class time, or a combination thereof in a supervised agricultural experience program. 

Recipients must also demonstrate their leadership ability by performing 10 procedures of Parliamentary Law, giving a six-minute speech on an agriculture or FFA-related topic, and serving as an officer, committee chairperson, or participating member of a chapter committee. Students also are required to complete at least 25 hours of community service.
