Incumbent John Weyh defeated challenger Jason Sackreiter in a close race for Milbank’s Ward 1 city council seat.  Ward 1 has 682 eligible voters.  Weyh earned 17 votes and Sackreiter received 15. Cynthia Schumacher, finance officer for the City of Milbank, said as far as she recalled, the low turnout (at 4.7 percent ) was unprecedented. Sackreiter did not request a recount.

At a special meeting on Wednesday, June 28, the city council will canvass the election. In general, canvassing an election means to certify the accuracy and validity of the the votes for official submission. The meeting begins at 5 p.m.

Weyh begins a new three-year term in July. He began serving on the council in August 2022, when Mayor Raffety appointed him to replace Steve Wiener, whose term had expired.
