Milbank Fire and Rescue was dispatched to the Milt Stengel farm in rural Milbank at 2:15 p.m. on September 13. Upon arrival, the team found a hayshed completely engulfed in flames and with its roof collapsed. The shed contained approximately 300-325 square bales.

According to Milbank Fire Chief David Giesen, firefighters went into defensive mode to protect the structure’s surroundings and contain the fire to the hayshed.  Mutual aid was also requested from the Corona and Big Stone fire departments for tanker trucks to shuttle water.”
Giesen said, “We needed to pump about 180,000 gals of water to contain the fire and extinguish the bales. The shed and bales were a complete loss. Firefighters were on scene for about six hours.”

Assistance was also provided by Grant-Roberts Ambulance. Berkner Excavating provided an excavator.
