The  Bulldogs faced another formidable foe on the football field in Sioux Falls on Friday, September 28. Milbank put up a fight in the first half to keep up at 28 -14, but Sioux Falls Christian kept their foot on the gas pedal in the second half to charge ahead. Milbank eventually took the loss at  60-14.  

The first quarter began with a quick strike from Sioux Falls Christian. With just 10:36 left in the quarter, the Chargers’ quarterback Lincoln Prins sent a 10-yard pass to Brady Witte for a touchdown. The extra point kick by Jacob Docter was good to put Sioux Falls Christian ahead 7-0.

The Bulldogs bit back.  With 3:14 remaining on the clock in the first quarter, quarterback Garrett Mertens tucked the ball and took it to the house on an 11-yard touchdown run. Moises Luna kicked for the extra point and the Bulldogs tied things up  at 7-7.

Sioux Falls Christian then went on a tear.  They scored three unanswered touchdowns to end the quarter with a 28-7 lead.

In the second quarter, the Bulldogs barked again. With 3:13 remaining, Jayden Johnson hauled in a 13-yard touchdown pass from Mertens.  Luna put the kick up and through to bring the score to 28-14, but Milbank’s surge proved to be the Bulldogs’ final points of the game.

Sioux Falls Christian scored five more touchdowns. The halftime score was 35-14 in favor of the Chargers. The score moved to 47-14 after three quarters, and the final score stood at 60-14.

Milbank collected 188 total yards. They gained 155 yards passing and 33 yards rushing. Mertens connected on 11 of 26. He was also the leading rusher. Johnson led the Dawgs with eight receptions for 117 yards. Emmett Hanson had two receptions for 24 yards. Tate Schlueter added one for 14 yards.

For the Bulldogs’ defense, Sam Rick led the team with five tackles. Hanson and Ethan Owen each had four tackles. Hanson had three assists, a sack, and one tackle for a loss. Mertens, Layten Osowski, and Bergen Nolting made three tackles apiece. Johnson and Schlueter each had two. Jesse  Schneck, Jaxson Wiese, Esteban Abrego, Landon Novy, and Braylen Bowsher contributed one tackle apiece. Carter Gloe added an assist.

The Chargers accumulated 384 yards – 242 passing and 142 on the ground. Prins completed 15 of 24. Tate Connell was SFC’s leading rusher with 88 yards. Johnny Skyberg caught four receptions for 52 yards, and Witte grabbed one for 10. Kade Van Egdom made four tackles to lead the Chargers’ defense and Austin Connell was next with three.
