Milbank debaters and oral interp students teamed up to win the Class A Sweepstakes trophy at the Aberdeen Golden Eagle Tournament on Friday and Saturday, November 3-4. Max Schuelke earned first in varsity Lincoln-Douglas debate and Bri Hicks took first in novice Lincoln-Douglas debate. Kiera Steffen came in second in congressional debate, and Qualon Grant took sixth in informative oratory.
Sweepstakes awards are determined by the number of team points. All wins, losses, and rankings translate to points. Coach Kathy Tyler commented, “Quality and quantity count!”
The duos of Shane Spiering and Evan Kretzschmar, Qualon Grant and Camron Graham, Ruth Gomez and Ixtal Macias, and Elexia Quintanilla and Dane Anderson competed in the public forum category. Gomez also competed in original oratory and Spiering entered the informative oratory and international extemp categories.
Tyler noted, “Debaters realized they weren’t as prepared as they thought they were and have major improvement plans for this week.”
