Pat DeFea was named the True Friends of Education Award winner for 2023-2024. Robin Schuelke, a member of the Milbank Education Association and MHS math teacher, presented the award to DeFea during the regular meeting of the Milbank School District Board of Education on Monday, November 13.
Schuelke said, “Pat has owned and operated DeFea Transportation for 25 years. He is known for getting up before 4 a.m. to check the roads in all areas of the county when the weather is bad to help Mr. Downes determine if school should be delayed or canceled.”
Schuelke went on to say, “Pat has been known to drive kids home in his personal vehicle if the road was not in condition for the bus to travel on. His bus drivers have also expressed how fair he is in offering competitive pay and how he is very generous at Christmastime. Pat goes above and beyond the call of duty and we as a school district are most appreciative of him.”
Pat expressed his heartfelt thanks to the organization and said, “It’s hard to believe it has been 25 years. I really enjoy working with everyone.” It was the second time DeFea has received the award in 25 years. Click here to read more about how Pat DeFea has helped kids get to school for nearly 40 years!
