Kathy Tyler, head coach for the MHS debate teams, said, “After a grueling day, Max Schuelke brought home the second-place trophy in Lincoln-Douglas.” Tanen Schmieg placed second in novice Lincoln-Douglas, and Bri Hicks placed fourth. The Milbank debaters earned the awards at the Roosevelt Sweepstakes Tournament in Sioux Falls on Saturday, November 11.

Elexia Quintanilla and Rylen Frerichs teamed up for a 3-2 record in junior varsity Public Forum. Dane Anderson and Preston Laskowski finished the day with a 2-3 record. The duo of Qualon Grant and Camron Graham and the duo of Ruth Luis-Gomez and Ixtal Macias also competed.

Debaters also spent Friday and Saturday, November 10 and 11, at the Washington Warrior Invitational in Sioux Falls. That tournament featured only individual events. Graham placed third in Novice Informative Oratory and Schuelke placed third in Domestic Extemp.

On Tuesday, November 7, the Bulldogs hosted 26 teams from four schools for their annual Milbank Novice Tournament. The event featured Public Forum and Lincoln-Douglas competitions. Bri Hicks placed second in Lincoln-Douglas. Izabella Glomstad received third place honors, and Tanen Schmeig finished fourth.

Three teams entered the Public Forum division. Parker Grabow and Preston Laskowski went 2-1 to place seventh. Carter Folk and Franklin Pederson finished with a 1-2 record. Jenna Korstjens and Taylor Hallquist finished with a 0-3 record.

What’s next? This week, the Bulldogs travel to Watertown for a novice tournament on Tuesday, November 14, and the McGovern Tournament in Mitchell on Friday and Saturday, November 17-18.
