A major blaze caused fire, smoke, and water damage to a home in rural Milbank early Sunday morning. The toll could have been much higher, however, if the owner’s heroic canine had not alerted him and allowed them to get to safety.

At approximately 12:40 a.m. on Sunday, April 21, Eric Brewster, owner of Brewster Building Center in Milbank, was awakened by his dog, George, who was barking at the smoke detectors as flames began to spread throughout the brick structure. Both were able to safely exit the residence. Milbank Fire and Rescue was dispatched to the residence at 48132 151st Street. According to Milbank Fire Chief David Giesen, “Upon arrival firefighters found smoke and flames coming from the eaves on the south and west side of the house and there were also visible flames coming from the roof.”

“Firefighters launched an interior attack, but were pulled back due to the heavy fire load from above,” Giesen explained. ‘Firefighters then utilized ladders to attack the flames from above as ground crews fought the flames from the exterior.”

The house suffered major fire, smoke, and water damage. The cause has been deemed accidental, but will remain under investigation by the office of the South Dakota Fire Marshal to determine its exact cause. Giesen said, “Firefighters worked the scene until approximately 6 a.m. and returned periodically to check for any rekindling.” Giesen also noted that he is not aware of any health problems Eric or George suffered due to the blaze.

Chief Giesen thanked the Big Stone Fire Department for providing mutual aid in the form of tankers and additional manpower. He also thanked retired firefighters Brett Storm and Chad Wientjes for assisting with shuttling water. Grant-Roberts Ambulance, the Grant County Sheriff’s Office, and Grant County Emergency Management also responded to the incident..
