Bennett Schwenn of Milbank, a rising sophomore at the University of South Dakota, was named to the men’s Academic All-Summit League Outdoor Track and Field Team on Tuesday, June 5. This is Schwenn’s second All-Summit honor and it was earned in part by his prowess in the long jump and triple jump. Schwenn joins 15 other male athletes and 16 female athletes on the two lists. Winners hail from as far away as Norway and Sweden, and three are from Canada. Eight of the athletes claim hometowns in South Dakota.
All were selected from over 3,000 student-athletes who attend the member institutions of the University of Denver, University of Missouri-Kansas City, University of North Dakota, North Dakota State University, University of Nebraska Omaha, Oral Roberts University, University of St. Thomas, University of South Dakota and South Dakota State University.
To be eligible for the Academic All-League team, a student-athlete must have a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.30 (on a 4.0 scale). However, none of the athletes on this year’s list fell below a 3.67. Schwenn, who is studying for a business degree, earned a 4.0, along with 12 other team members. Athletes must also have completed at least one full academic year at their current institution and participated in 50 percent of their team’s competitions.
The Summit League is renowned for producing 15 NCAA National Champions and more than 140 All-Americans and 110 Academic All-Americans. In 2022-23, former Summit League athletes competed in the NBA, in MLB, on the PGA Tour, on the LPGA Tour, and in Major League Soccer (MLS).
