MHS Speech & Debate Team Wins Sweepstakes Award

Milbank’s speech and debate team claimed their second sweepstakes trophy in Class A this season. They earned the most recent award during the Sioux Falls Washington Warrior Invitational held November 15 -16. Sweepstakes awards are presented in a class based on the total number of team points accrued by adding teammates individual points accumulated in each round. During the events, students compete in mixed classes. 

Milbank’s oral interp team competed during Friday’s events. As a duo, Dana Chan and Macy Mueller placed sixth. Individually, Annabelle Schwenn placed fifth in novice Humorous Interp, and Carlos Olivares Zuniga placed ninth in Non-Original Oratory. 

Saturday was a debate-only day of the tourney that included two sessions of Student Congress. MHS senior Max Schuelke, won first place in the varsity Lincoln-Douglas division. Freshman Tate Pew finished second amongst the novice Lincoln Douglas debaters. Bri Hicks took ninth in the novice division.

The duo of Camron Graham and Qualon Grant placed fourth in varsity Public Forum. Trixie Coalter and Ruth Luis Gomez placed fifth in novice Public Forum. Taylor Hallquist and Preston Laskowski placed ninth in that event. In the Student Congress division, Elexia Quintanilla placed second. Keira Steffen took fourth. 

Charlotte Street, Jericho Jones, Eleanor Gastineau, and Izzy Glomstad also participated.

What’s next? The Bulldogs go on the road to Aberdeen to compete in the Golden Eagles Cup this Friday and Saturday, November 22 and 23.
