Firefighters from the Milbank Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched to the Ryan and Bobbi Hanson home at 1010 S. 7th Street in Milbank at approximately 9:15 a.m. on Saturday, December 21.

“Upon arrival, flames were visible above the kitchen area,” reported Milbank Fire Chief David Giesen. He said, “Firefighters laid down salvage tarps and began pulling down the ceiling sheetrock and insulation to extinguish the smoldering insulation. Firefighters then shoveled the debris outside to remove the risk of any hot embers from igniting.”

Giesen explained, “A hole was cut in the roof to prevent the spread of flames to other portions of the residence.” He also noted firefighters moved quickly and were able to contain the fire and prevent it from spreading through the residence. Early estimations indicate the fire was caused by radiant heating strips in the ceiling that shorted.

Giesen also commended his team, “Members of our department take pride in the training and schooling we do throughout the year to prepare us for different situations. The dedication of the department shone through during this fire.”

The Milbank Fire Department was assisted by the Milbank Police Department – in particular, Officer Karl transported SCBA (self-contained breathing apparatus) bottles to and from from the Fire Hall for refills. The Grant County Sheriff’s Office and Grant-Roberts Ambulance Service also provided mutual aid.
