South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley confirmed that a suspect has been arrested following a shooting at Avantara in Milbank today, Wednesday, January 15. The report alleges a disgruntled employee shot her supervisor in the nasal cavity. The suspect was apprehended when she left the building.
The incident began to unfold just before noon, when about a dozen emergency vehicles with red lights flashing, blocked areas of the southwest Milbank neighborhood that includes Avantara, Park Place, Parkview Church, and Pribyl Park. The respondents included law enforcement from several Grant County agencies and nearby agencies in Minnesota, including Lac qui Parle County. Gunshots had been reported by members of the community.

At approximately 1:30 p.m., Kevin Schuelke, head of Grant County Emergency Management, confirmed a suspect was in custody and there was no threat to the public. Residents of Avantara were not evacuated from the nursing and rehabilitation center.

Milbank Chief of Police Corey Hooth stated, “The South Dakota Department of Criminal Investigation is taking the lead on this. They are actively investigating, and at this time, I can’t say anything more or I could taint the investigation.”
