Milbank won the first-place trophy in the Class A Sweepstakes of the annual Lincoln Silver Bowl Tournament. The Bulldogs competed against 22 schools and 225 speakers during 18 events at Sioux Falls Lincoln High School on Saturday, January 18.
Max Schuelke of MHS took top honors from amongst 21 entries in Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Keira Steffen placed fourth in Congressional Debate. The teams of Miriam Del Angel Chavez and Keira Steffen and Dana Chan and Zane Kilde each made it to the semifinals in Novice Public Forum. Del Angel Chavez and Charlotte Street entered Novice Extemp and Extemp Debate for the first time.
Bri Hicks competed in varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Camron Graham and Qualon Grant participated in the varsity division of Public Forum. Street entered varsity US Extemp. Carlos Olivares Zuniga competed in Humorous Interp. Ruth Luis Gomez competed in Original Oratory for the first time this year. Trixie Coalter entered the Point of Information and Dramatic Interp competitions.
Schuelke, Kilde, Chan, Street, and Coalter each earned perfect Speaker Points at least once during the tournament.
Coach Kathy Tyler commented, “A lot of the credit for the success of this speech team goes to Miriah Hicks, assistant debate coach. She is a former debater from Deuel and fills a huge coaching gap in places where I don’t have the knowledge (which is most of them!). In addition to helping at daily practices, she travels to each tournament where she judges and helps with whatever comes up.”
Tyler also offered thanks to the school and the community for their support of the Milbank program and said, “Debate, speech, and research are skills that never grow old.”
