The Bulldogs speech and debate team brought home the first-place Class A Sweepstakes trophy from the 64th Annual Roberts Invitational held at Watertown High... Milbank Debaters Win Fifth Class A Sweepstakes Trophy This Season

The Bulldogs speech and debate team brought home the first-place Class A Sweepstakes trophy from the 64th Annual Roberts Invitational held at Watertown High School on January 24-25. It was the fifth trophy of its kind the team has collected this season. 

Milbank competed against 14 other schools and over 150 students during the two-day tournament. Beresford and Lennox also placed in the A Division. Harrisburg, O’Gorman, and Aberdeen Central took home the AA honors. Other teams included Brandon Valley, Brookings, Huron, Mitchell, Sioux Falls Jefferson, Sioux Falls Roosevelt, Sioux Falls Washington, Watertown, and Yankton.

For Milbank, Keira Steffen brought home second place in Congressional Debate. Max Schuelke placed second in the Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Tate Pew placed third in Novice Lincoln Douglas. The team of Bri Hicks and Steffen made the semi-final round in the JV Public Forum Debate. They finished with a  3-2 record. The JV teams of Charlotte Street and Elexia Quintanilla and Zane Kilde and Dana Chan posted 2-3 records. Qualon Grant and Camron Graham finished with a 1-4 record in the Varsity Public Forum competition. Pew, Schuelke, Steffen, and Hicks each earned perfect Speaker Points by obtaining 30 of the 30 possible.

In individual events, Addison Brown placed second in Novice Informative Oratory.  Pew placed fifth in Novice Original Oratory.

Hicks also competed in Varsity Informative Oratory; Street, in Varsity US Extemp; Carlos Olivares Zuniga, in Humorous Interp; Ruth Luis Gomez and Isabella Glomstad, in Original Oratory; Miriam Del Angel Chavez, in Novice Exemp; and Trixie Coalter, in Point of Information (POI) and Dramatic Interp.

What’s next? Milbank goes on the road again to Sioux Falls Jefferson on January 31 and February 1 for the annual Cavalier Tournament. The Bulldogs also have three more tournaments on their schedule before the National Qualifier at the end of February.
