MHS debater Max Schuelke was honored by the South Dakota high school speech and debate community during the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Sweet-Stakes Tournament held... Schuelke Wins State Debate Award and Scholarship

MHS debater Max Schuelke was honored by the South Dakota high school speech and debate community during the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Sweet-Stakes Tournament held February 7-8. Schuelke received the Kristine Hayes Award in recognition of his outstanding sportsmanship, leadership, and positive approach to speech and debate. The award, named after Kristine Hayes, a retired speech coach from Deuel and Sioux Falls Lincoln high schools, is unique in that the recipient is chosen by students and debate coaches from other schools.

Ryan Wells of Black Hills Credit Union, the company that sponsors the accolade stated, “[The award] is a testament to Schuelke’s impact on his peers and his ability to foster a spirit of camaraderie and respect within the competitive debate circuit.” A $1,000 college scholarship accompanies the award.

“This award isn’t just about competitive success,” Wells noted. “It’s about the kind of competitor who uplifts those around them, showing integrity, kindness, and dedication to the art of debate. Max Schuelke embodies all of those qualities, and I couldn’t be happier that he was chosen as this year’s recipient.”

“Schuelke’s recognition reflects his commitment to excellence, fairness, and the spirit of healthy competition—values that embody the legacy of Kristine Hayes in the speech and debate community,” Wells added.

The excitement of the day also included Schuelke placing second in Varsity Lincoln-Douglas Debate, and Tate Pew placing third in Novice Lincoln-Douglas Debate. The Public Forum duos of Qualon Grant and Camron Graham and Miriam Del Angel Chavez and Addison Brown each finished the tournament with a 2-3 record. Schuelke also earned first in Speaker Point awards. Everything added up to Milbank bringing home the first-place trophy for the Class A schools.

What’s next? Kathy Tyler, head coach for Milbank, says, “We’re heading to Harrisburg for their Annual Rushmore Tournament on Valentine’s Day.”
