Max Schuelke, a senior at Milbank High School, will compete in the National Speech and Debate Tournament to be held June 15-20 in Des Moines, Iowa. Schuelke will be one of two Lincoln-Douglas debaters representing the Northern South Dakota District. They will join 6,000 students from over 2000 schools across the nation.

According to Kathy Tyler, head coach for MHS, “Quals were decided at the annual tournament held at Sioux Falls Jefferson last weekend.” Schuelke placed second in the Lincoln Douglas division. Mallory Wells of Brookings High School took first place.

According to Tyler, South Dakota debate is divided into two districts, Northern and Rushmore. Aberdeen, Brookings, Watertown, Lennox, Mitchell, Milbank, and Huron make up the Northern District.  Schools in the southern and western part of the state complete the Rushmore District. Each school can enter up to four teams or participants in each event, all of which are at the varsity level.

Milbank was represented in the Public forum events by Camron Graham and Qualon Grant; Dana Chan and Zane Kilde; and Miriam Del Angel Chavez and Charlotte Street. Trixie Coalter competed in  Dramatic Interp. Schuelke and Bri Hicks entered Lincoln-Douglas Debate. Street, Keira Steffen, and Schuelke also competed in the Extemp divisions.

Two additional qualifying events, Big Question and Congressional Debate, will be held at Sioux Falls Jefferson on March 14. Steffen and Street will compete in Congress. Bri Hicks will compete in Big Question.

What’s next?  Milbank debaters are headed to the 2025 State A tournament  in Brookings on March 7-8.
