National Honor Society Inducts 20 New MHS Members

The Milbank High School chapter of National Honor Society (NHS) inducted 20 new members on March 12. Parents were invited to attend the ceremony performed by students who had previously joined the organization.

The inductees had opted to apply for the honor that is based on leadership, character, and service. They must also have attained a cumulative GPA of 3.5.

MHS Principal Dan Snaza said,  “Art Campbell, who served three principals ago, created an evaluation sheet so people could not call this a popularity contest. He wanted to take out as much subjectivity as possible.” 

Students are chosen by an anonymous committee who rate each one from 1-4 on the qualities of leadership, character, and service. A student whose scores add up to 12 make it to the next round.

According to Snaza, the group is looking for kids that are involved in multiple activities and that lead positively.  “Leaders aren’t always the most vocal, but they do lead by action both in and out of school. Service is also important,  but it is not  difficult to find opportunities for that in Milbank because students don’t graduate if they don’t fulfill their community service obligation.”

Snaza also noted, “The organization is looking for growth from everyone in every aspect so those who apply and don’t make it as a junior also have the opportunity to try again as a senior.”
