Kiera Steffen, Olivia Foell, Paige Korstjens, and Kalli Moser have been selected by American Legion Auxiliary Post 9 in Milbank to represent them at South Dakota’s 2025 Girls State. The annual event will be held at the University of South Dakota in Vermillion from May 25-29. This year’s craft project will be making poppies and poppy ornaments to honor our veterans.
American Legion Auxiliary South Dakota Girls State was founded at Mitchell in 1947. It met regularly each year on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University until 1985, when it was moved to the campus of South Dakota State University, Brookings. In 2002, the program was moved to the University of South Dakota, Vermillion.
The organization is under the sponsorship of the South Dakota Department of the American Legion Auxiliary. From an enrollment of 117 girls in 1947, ALA SD Girls State has grown to its present enrollment of over 400 girls. Girls State is also established in 50 departments across the country. 2025 ALA Girls Nation – with two representatives from each state – will be held July 19-26 in Washington, D.C.
