The new MHS chapter of Family, Career and Community Leaders of America (FCCLA) was represented by 19 students at the South Dakota FCCLA State Leadership Conference. The event was held at the Ramkota Hotel and Convention Center in Sioux Falls from April 26-28.

Seven members from Milbank participated in STAR (Students Taking Action with Recognition) events. Kalli Moser placed second and received a gold award in Level 3 Baking and Pastry. She advances to the National Leadership Conference to be held in Washington, D.C., from July 6-10. Her adviser Sara Koepke will accompany her.
Alexis Meyer received a silver award in Level 3 Early Childhood Development. Ivy Dries, Alexa Adolph, and Caitlyn Frerichs each received a bronze award in Level 3 Interior Design. Alexis Celiz and Kylynn Schwandt each received a silver award in Level 2 Interior Design.
South Dakota has 36 affiliated FCCLA chapters. FCCLA competitive events, service projects, and leadership opportunities in part encourage members to gain real-world skills. The state conference also allowed students to connect with peers from across South Dakota who share an interest in family and consumer sciences education. Sessions focused on career readiness, community involvement, and personal growth.
“This is an exciting moment for our school district,” said Koepke. “Starting a new chapter and immediately having 19 students represent Milbank and compete in STAR events speaks volumes about their motivation and commitment. We have navigated our first year with grace and excitement with what our chapter will be doing for years to come,“ Koepke added.
