Otter Tail Power Enhancing Reliability in Milbank Area
Local News December 3, 2025 Staff 0

If you think you are seeing more Otter Tail Power (OTP) trucks than usual in the Milbank area, you are correct. OTP crews have been busy upgrading the electric system in an effort that is expected to continue into late 2026. OTP officials remind everyone to stay alert and safe during this transition – slow down and allow extra time to reach your destination.
OTP Communications Manager Rebecca Michael gave an update on the process, “Work progresses on phase two of our Milbank Area Reliability Project, a multi-phase effort to strengthen the area’s electric infrastructure and support future growth. Phase two includes upgrades to the existing transmission line between the Milbank Northwest and Milbank South substations, extending to a new breaker station in Lac qui Parle County [MN]. We expect to complete this work by the third quarter of 2026.”
Michael also went on to explain, “To maintain electric service throughout early phase two construction this year, we temporarily served Milbank customers through a single feeder, which is the main power line that carries electricity from substations to the Milbank community. This temporary setup meant more customers were affected by electricity interruptions.”
In mid-September, OTP was able to separate the city into two feeders, which was designed to help reduce the number of outages. Michael says. “By next summer we expect to return to our normal three-feeder operations, further reducing the impact of potential outages. We also accelerated tree trimming in the area to help reduce potential outages.”
“This project is a major investment in Milbank’s electric system,” said Area Manager Scott Wiese. “We appreciate the community’s patience as we complete these upgrades and improve long-term reliability for the area.”
OTP also encourages residents to use extra caution near construction sites. “Safety is one of our core values, not only for our crews, but also for our neighbors,” said Wiese. “Thank you for your understanding as we upgrade the electric system to better serve you for years to come.”
