Sara Colombe, head of agricultural education at MHS and the Milbank FFA adviser, will attend a CASE 4 professional development institute in Greeley, Colorado, to study the Food Science and Safety CASE curriculum. Students investigate food science concepts and situations including food safety, food chemistry, food processing, food product development, and marketing.
“This certification will enable me to better teach students about fermentation, proteins, sugars, fats, and the interactions of these components in food systems,” Colombe stated. “Ultimately, it will help prepare students with the scientific skills needed to become strong candidates for local food science and processing careers.”
CASE 4 (Curriculum for Agricultural Science Education) is an initiative of the National Council for Agricultural Education. The courses are designed for new and seasoned teachers who attend classes and workshops to achieve lifetime certification, learn new coursework, and participate in cohort groups to build a nationwide network of teachers.
During her time with CASE Institute, Colombe will spend seven to eight-hour days in a classroom at Greeley High School and two days per week virtually working through nearly every lesson in the year-long curriculum. One of the goals is to learn to deliver inquiry-based lessons that will shift focus in the classroom from teacher-led to student-directed learning.
